New clients often ask us to explain what the difference is between a domain name and web hosting. In this and my next blog I’ll explain what they both are and how they work together. They are two separate things but let’s face it we weren’t born knowing about this. In my Blog today I will try and simplify what a web host is and tomorrow I’ll explain what a domain name is and how they work together.
When you want to start a business in the real world, you need to find a physical location to store and sell your products. It’s the same in the digital world when you want to set up a website you need to find a place to store all of your website information such as images, files and HTML Code. Web hosts supply this storage space and charge a rental fee depending on your requirements. So in short, by paying for a hosting service you are renting storage space on the internet.
Without an online location, your files would just sit on your computer and they would never be seen by anyone. A web host not only stores your website information but will deliver the files for your website as soon as a browser types in your domain name.
In our next Blog I'll explain what a domain name is and how web hosting and domains go hand in hand.
