In a previous blog, I explained what a web host does. In this Blog I’ll explain what a domain name is and why we need both a domain and web hosting to have a successful website.
Your Domain Name is the address of your website that people type in the browser’s URL bar to visit your site. If you have a physical store you would give your customers your address so they can visit your store. If you are renting space on the internet, you give customers your domain name so they can find your store online.
In more detail, the Internet is a giant network of computers connected to each other. To easily identify them, each computer has an assigned series of numbers called an IP Address. IP addresses generally look like this: 220.127.116.11
Computers have no problem identifying and remembering these numbers but as mere humans it would be impossible for us to remember them. To solve this problem, domain names were invented. A domain name uses words which makes it easy for us to remember website addresses.
In short, if you want to visit a website on the internet you don’t need to type a string of numbers you can type in an easy to remember domain name.
